Fasting Resources

  • What is Christian Fasting?

Fasting is a spiritual discipline where believers intentionally abstain from certain foods, drinks, or activities to focus on God, seek His guidance, and deepen their relationship with Him. During Pursuit Week at Celebration Church, we will pray and worship together at the start of the year, uniting as we rise to God’s higher calling through fasting.

It’s important to note that fasting should be approached with wisdom and care. If you have health concerns, consult a physician before participating in any form of fasting.

  • What Does the Bible Say About Fasting?

Fasting has a strong foundation in Scripture, where it is practiced as an act of worship and dependence on God:

    • Jesus on Fasting: Jesus taught His disciples about the right attitude toward fasting, emphasizing sincerity and devotion to God. He said, “Now whenever you fast, do not make a gloomy face as the hypocrites do, for they distort their faces so that they will be noticed by people when they are fasting… But as for you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that your fasting will not be noticed by people, but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.” (Matthew 6:16-18, NASB)
    • Daniel’s Fast: The prophet Daniel practiced a partial fast, abstaining from rich foods and seeking God’s guidance in prayer. “I did not eat any tasty food, nor did meat or wine enter my mouth, nor did I use any ointment at all, until the entire three weeks were completed.” (Daniel 10:3, NASB)
    • Spiritual Breakthroughs: Fasting is often paired with prayer for significant spiritual breakthroughs, as seen in the early church. “While they were serving the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set Barnabas and Saul apart for Me for the work to which I have called them.’” (Acts 13:2, NASB)
  • Types of Fasts

There are different ways to fast, allowing for personal choice and physical considerations:

    1. Complete Fast: Abstaining from all food and consuming only liquids, such as water or juice. This type of fast requires careful planning and is best done for a short duration.

    2. Partial Fast (Daniel Fast): Avoiding specific foods, such as meat, sweets, and bread, while eating fruits, vegetables, and water. This is modeled after Daniel’s example (Daniel 10:3, NASB).

    3. Intermittent Fast: Limiting food intake to specific times of the day, such as fasting from sunrise to sunset.

    4. Soul Fast: Abstaining from non-food distractions, like social media, television, or other activities, to focus on God. This is a good option for those who cannot fast from food due to health reasons.

  • Spiritual Benefits of Fasting

Fasting is more than simply going without food. It’s a way to humble ourselves before God, seek His will, and experience spiritual renewal. Through fasting, we can:

    • Align our hearts with God’s purposes.
    • Hear His voice more clearly.
    • Cultivate discipline and reliance on the Holy Spirit.
    • Deepen our faith and strengthen our spiritual walk.

Isaiah 58:6 reminds us of God’s heart for fasting: “Is this not the fast that I choose: To release the bonds of wickedness, to undo the ropes of the yoke, and to let the oppressed go free, and break every yoke?” (Isaiah 58:6, NASB).

  • Practical Guidelines for Fasting

    1. Pray Before You Begin: Ask God to guide your fast and reveal areas where He wants to work in your life.

    2. Start Small: If you’re new to fasting, begin with a partial fast or a shorter duration.

    3. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water, especially during complete or partial fasts.

    4. Pair Fasting with Prayer: Use the time you would normally spend eating or on distractions to pray, worship, and read Scripture.

    • Follow along in our Pursuit Week Devotional

    5. Consult Your Doctor: If you have medical conditions or concerns, seek advice from a healthcare professional before fasting.

  • Pursuit Week

As we engage Pursuit Week, let’s commit to fasting and prayer as an act of worship, seeking God’s presence and aligning our lives with His higher calling. Together, we will rise in faith and step into the plans He has for us. Join us at Pursuit Week Sunday, January 5th at 6pm and Monday, January 6th through Friday, January 10th every night at 7pm at our Georgetown and Central Austin Locations.

Devotionals

  • Day 1: “A Higher Refuge”
    Scripture Focus: Psalm 46:1-3

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Wway and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea…

When life feels unsteady, we often scramble for something to hold onto—people, routines, or achievements. But what happens when the ground beneath us gives way? Psalm 46 reminds us that God is not just a shelter we run to when storms hit—He is our constant refuge. The invitation is clear: stop scrambling, stop stressing, and step into the higher refuge of His presence. Scripture is the only authority that we allow to shape our perspective.

    Reflection:

What in your life makes you feel unstable? How does knowing God is an unshakeable refuge shift your perspective?

    Personal Prayer:

Lord, I surrender my fears to You today. Be my refuge when the storms of life feel overwhelming. Teach me to rest in the strength of Your presence. Remind me that you are Higher than any situation I may face. Amen.

    Prayer for Celebration:

Pray for our church and leadership to be filled with wisdom, vision, and strength as we pursue God’s purpose together in 2025, impacting lives for His glory.

  • Day 2: “A Higher Strength”
    Scripture Focus: Psalm 46:4-5
“There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. God is within her, she will not fall…”

Strength isn’t always about pushing through; sometimes, it’s about leaning in. The river in this verse represents God’s sustaining presence—a flow of strength, joy, and peace that doesn’t dry up. When Jesus is our Pursuit, we draw from a source that will never fail us. His strength becomes our strength, and His joy becomes our fuel.

     Reflection:

What areas of your life are you striving in your own strength? How can you allow God’s strength to flow through you instead?

    Personal Prayer:

Jesus, I need Your strength today. Let the rivers of Your peace and joy flow into my weary heart. Teach me to abide in You. Amen.

    Prayer for Celebration:

Pray for our Next Generation ministries—Celebration Kids, WAVE Students, and Young Adults—to make a greater impact than ever in 2025, equipping and inspiring them to lead their peers to Jesus.

  • Day 3: “A Higher Peace”

    Scripture Focus: Psalm 46:10

“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

In a world that thrives on busyness, stillness feels counterproductive. Yet, stillness is where clarity, peace, and purpose are birthed. God isn’t asking you to figure everything out; He’s inviting you to trust Him. Having peace and stillness isn’t inactivity—it’s a declaration of faith that He’s in control. He is the Prince of Peace and we can boldly stand in the midst of uncertainty upon the most certain foundation of all: Jesus.

    Reflection:

Where do you struggle to be still in life? What would it look like to give God space to move in those areas?

    Personal Prayer:

Lord, help me embrace the gift of stillness. In the quiet, may I hear Your voice and know Your presence. Teach me to trust You more deeply. Amen.

    Prayer for Celebration:

Pray for those in Celebration Church who are carrying personal or family challenges, that they may feel God’s comforting presence, find strength in their faith, and experience His peace as they trust Him to guide them through.

  • Day 4: “A Higher Perspective”

    Scripture Focus: Psalm 46:6-7

“Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts. The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.”

When chaos surrounds us, our perspective becomes clouded by fear or doubt. But Psalm 46 calls us to lift our eyes higher. God’s voice commands the earth to melt, and His presence promises to steady us. Pursuing Jesus means anchoring ourselves to a perspective that sees beyond the temporary and into the eternal.

    Reflection:

What current circumstances are limiting your perspective? How can you lift your eyes to God today?

    Personal Prayer:

God, open my eyes to see as You see. Give me a higher perspective that isn’t swayed by the noise around me. You are my fortress and my peace. Amen.

    Prayer for Celebration:

Pray for our international ministries, including our locations in Italy and Mozambique, and the missionaries and ministries we support worldwide. Ask God to empower us to bring freedom to the captives and ignite revival across generations through the Gospel.

  • Day 5: “A Higher Pursuit”

    Scripture Focus: Psalm 46:8-9

“Come and see what the Lord has done… He says, ‘Be still, and know that I am God.’”

Pursuing Jesus isn’t just about what we do but who we’re becoming. It’s an invitation to step into awe and wonder at His works. God is not distant—He’s inviting you to “come and see.” As we pursue Him, we discover that He’s been pursuing us all along.

    Reflection:

How has God been moving in your life lately? Where have you seen His hand at work?

    Prayer:

Jesus, I want to see You more clearly. Open my eyes to Your works and draw my heart closer to Yours. May my life be a reflection of Your pursuit of me. Amen.

    Prayer for Celebration

Pray for the launch of our new Lake Travis location, that it will shine the light of Jesus and spread the good news of the Gospel, transforming lives and making His name known in the community.

  • Day 6: “A Higher Calling”

    Scripture Focus: Psalm 46:11

“The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.”

You were made for more than just surviving—you were called to thrive in the fullness of God’s presence. Pursuing Jesus means stepping into the higher calling of being His hands and feet to the world. Psalm 46 declares that God is with us, and this truth equips us to live boldly and purposefully. On January 12th, we begin a new series called Higher, launching us into 2025 with clarity, energy, and a renewed passion for our calling as a church family. Together, we’ll discover what it means to live with bold faith, pursue Jesus wholeheartedly, and embrace the life He has called us to live.

    Reflection:

What would it look like to fully embrace God’s higher calling for your life? How can you step into that calling today?

    Prayer:

Lord, thank You for being my refuge and strength. Help me to live boldly in Your higher calling. Use me to bring Your hope and love to those around me. Prepare my heart for all You have planned as we step into this new season together. Amen.

    Prayer for Celebration:

Pray for revival in our city and within Celebration Church, as more lives are transformed and people come to Jesus in greater numbers. Also, pray for a deeper conviction for the high calling of Jesus in 2025, that we will continue to develop strong Christians by connecting people to Christ, the Church, and His Calling!

    Closing Thought:

Pursuing Jesus isn’t a one-time decision; it’s a daily commitment to go higher with Him. Whether in stillness, strength, or surrender, know this: He is with you, and He is for you. Together as a church, let’s step into 2025 with faith, purpose, and a passion to pursue Him like never before. WE ARE GOING HIGHER.
